Memorial Description

Plaque with shallow pointed top and moulded edge. The dedication is carried in a shield-shape at the top, with a figure of a soldier facing centre to the left and a female figurel bearing a wreath on the right, also facing to the centre.
The names are in three columns surrounded and divided by a raised pattern. The quotation is carried along the bottom border. Two names seems to have been added in the space between the ‘shield’ and the raised pattern outlining the lists. All lettering is in sans serif capitals.

Notes

1. From Boldon Colliery, 989 men responded to the call. From the colliery itself, 304 men went, of whom 130 fell. At least 5% of those who served were gassed or wounded.

2. Plaques matching the design at the top of this memorial were distributed to to the families of those who fell. Two of these were John Peacock and Pte. Matthew Cleghorn See attached photo.
