Unveiled and dedicated August 1920 by the Bishop of Newcastle.

Memorial Description

Stained glass window representing King Oswald of Northumbria erecting the cross before the Battle of Heavenfield in 635 AD.
This is accompanied by a brass plaque of odd shape made to face the space it occupies, 45.5cm high, 77cm along top edge, and 116cm along the bottom edge. The border is studded with stones.

How money was raised

The brass plaque was paid for by public subscription, and jewels set round the edge were donated by the late Vicar (Rev. William Shield) and parishioners.

Notes

1. The licence granted in 1919 refers only to the brass plaque

2. At the dedication, the Bishop "expressed the regret, which everyone felt, that Mr. Shield had not lived to see the window dedicated for which he had worked so hard".

3. The Latin “Pro Deo Rege Grege” reads as “For God, King and the common man”.
