1. “One of the cottages was tastefully furnished for the occasion by the Bishop Auckland and District Co-operative Society”.
2. The men employed at the Colliery had raised £2,600 for the benefit of wives of soldiers during the war, and continued the fund for the benefit of widows and children.
3. Mr. Kellett was presented with the silver box as a memento of the occasion; Mr. Brown-Humes was presented with a silver cigarette box.
4 "Messrs. Pease and Partners propose to erect a number of memorial cottages for occupation by disabled soldiers or sailors in connection with their collieries in South Durham. These cottages will be substantial single-story buildings of attractive design, semi-detached, and provided with spacious gardens. Each house will have a comfortable living-room, well-equipped scullery; bath-room, and two large bedrooms. The plans provide for numerous labour-saving fitments and other devices for the comfort and convenience of the tenants. We illustrate above a sketch elevation of the pair of cottages about to be built at St. Helen's Colliery. It is pleasing to note that the local Miners' Lodge has also decided that their Memorial will take a similar shape. We commend this scheme as a particularly useful form in which to express gratitude to thosr who have suffered for England."
5 The first four occupants, who had the highest percentage of disability, with their families were announced as follows:
Mr. James Mooney, Front Street, St. Helen's, a stoker on a boat torpedoed in the North Sea who sustained severe injuries to his back;
Mr. George Lamb, Barracks Street, St. Helen's, wounded at least twice, and had injuries to his foot
Mr. John Martin, Fylands. wounded at least twice, and had injuries to his arm
Mr. John Harker, St. Helen's Square had lost a leg.
