"News reached Stanhope on Friday of the death of Pte. Joseph Rutherford, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Rutherford, of the Phoenix Hotel, Stanhope, from influenza and pneumonia. He was with the British forces on the Rhine. He leaves a widow and three children. The news cast quite a gloom over Stanhope".
