Plaque Rutherford 1920 St. Thomas the Apostle
St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Church Lane. In north aisle.
Unveiled 23rd March 1921 by Rev. H.S.H. Shaddick
Plaque curved to fit onto a pillar. There is a plain raised border. Lettering is in raised Roman capitals.
1. The news of Pte. Rutherford's death had been received after the war memorial in the church had been made. His parents had this plaque made so that the parish record would be completed.
2. Mr. and. Mrs. Rutherford’s address is given as Phoenix Hotel, Stanhope.

Auckland and County Gazette 04/03/1920 reports:
"News reached Stanhope on Friday of the death of Pte. Joseph Rutherford, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Rutherford, of the Phoenix Hotel, Stanhope, from influenza and pneumonia. He was with the British forces on the Rhine. He leaves a widow and three children. The news cast quite a gloom over Stanhope".
