Notes

1 This memorial lay for some years on the grassy corner of a car park of Wearmouth Colliery Welfare Sports and Social Club near part of an old wall. The Welfare Ground was part of J.E. Parrington’s property which included his family home. The site of the Wearmouth Colliery is now a football stadium.

2. Originally placed in the Miners’ Union Hall, Roker Avenue, where it was at the back of the stage where meetings were held. British Coal built a new baths and offices complex, and the former building was sold by the NUM. The plaque was taken to the colliery and placed on the ground outside the colliery canteen. It was finally moved to its last location. Following the erection of the new memorial, S130.16, the old one disappeared, reputedly broken up and used in the foundations of the new.

3. There was a proposal to resite it at the Stadium of Light football ground, but the Welfare Committee were firm in their decision that the Memorial should remain in its current location where it could be accessed by people who worked in the mines.

4. Following several years of requests for its repair from various sources, the memorial was considered to be beyond repair. An appeal was launched by Michael Murphy, Secretary, Wearmouth Colliery Miners Welfare to raise £3,000 towards the cost of a new memorial in its place, and to preserve the original under glass.

5. As well as cricket, there is also a very active bowls group meeting at this ground.

6. When the Great War started, 2560 men and boys of all classes were engaged at the colliery. By the time the war ended, 1,330 had seen service of some kind. 175 were killed.
