Notes

1. The church was built c1880, designed by C. Hodgson Fowler.

2. The bells and clock are not part of the memorial.

3. “Tower Fund Committee had been established in 1919. At the Thanksgiving for Peace the collection had been put aside for a suitable memorial for the War Dead of the village. The following January the exact form of this memorial was discussed. It was agreed that a tablet should be erected in the church, but there was rather more money available than was needed for just a tablet and the P.C.C. was asked by Mr. Teape to consider the alternatives of finding the salary for an Assistant Curate, or having a bell tower constructed. Both projects were costed and it was decided that a bell tower was the most easily funded idea. The Tower Fund Committee was thus formed at the Congregational meeting of November 1919. That year the Harvest Festival collection was divided between the Tower Fund and the purchase of new vestments. Mr. Teape proposed a design for the tower and had posters printed to appeal for funds and to show how the church would look properly bell towered.
Ill health forced Mr. Teape to retire in 1922 and he was succeeded by the Rev. G. Wreford Brown. Fund raising was slow and the Tower Fund sank into obscurity during Mr. Wreford Brown’s incumbency, but under the Rev. E.L. Fuller, his successor, the business was raised again and a new, cheaper (and in view of the subsidence by then affecting the north wall, much safer) design was chosen, and the work went ahead. The old single bell, saved from the wreckage of the first St. Mary’s, was given to the church of St. Mary Magdalene and Mr. Teape’s generous gift of 4 new bells was accepted with enthusiasm. The tower clock was given by Mrs. Hedley to commemorate her late husband Alfred Octavius Hedley. The new bell tower was dedicated in May 1930.” (Quoted from an unknown source in Simon Raine’s notes).
