Notes

1. A leaflet circulated at the time reads:
"The proposed memorial is to the men of Acomb and district, representing an area which includes also those parts which come within the civil and ecclesiastical parishes.
The parish church of St. John Lee is attractive for its beauty and loveliness of its situation. It is therefore particularly fitting that the memorial should take the form of a Lych Gate at the entrance to the picturesque churchyard.
The district can be proud of the part its men and women have played in the service of their country, both in the war of 1914-18 and that of 1939-45. For its size the number of those who have made the great sacrifice is large. It is hoped that the sense of debt we owe them will result in the memorial being brought to fruition by the ready response of all residents, both young and old."
