Unveiled 3rd September 1922 by Brigadier-General the Hon. Charles Lambton. Dedicated by Canon Newsom, Vicar of Newcastle.

Memorial Description

Oil painting 500cm high x 100cm wide of St. George and the Dragon by Louis Raemakers. St. George has his foot on the dragon, in the distance is the ruined tower of Ypres Cloth Hall.
Beneath this is a stone plaque 80cm high x 110cm wide bearing the dedication, on which the lettering is incised using serif upper and lower case lettering.

To the memory of
James Foster Riddell Brigadier General
who throughout his life upheld
and in his death maintained
the glorious traditions of the Regiment.
Gazetted in the Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers 1880
Commanded successively the 3rd & 2nd Battalions 1904-1908
Northumberland Infantry Brigade 1911-1915
killed in action April 26th 1915 leading his Brigade
in the attack on St.Julien in the Ypres Salient.

Notes

1. The dedication ceremony included contingents from the Fusiliers depot. The Guard of Honour was made up of men from 5th N.F.

2. St. George appears on the flag of the Northumberland Fusiliers.
