Unveiled 19/10 1921 by Sir Francis D. Blake, Bart., M.P., dedicated by Dr. Wardle Stafford.

Memorial Description

Plaque with domed top. The dates follow the curve at the top of the plaque. The names are listed in two columns divided by a raised vertical line. Lettering is in brass using Roman capitals.
Originally the plaque was in a richly moulded frame which echoed the shape, 4 ft 1½ ins x 6 ft 5¾ ins x 4½ ins. It bore a wreath in half relief at the bottom.

Oak with brass letters.

Notes

1. The plaque was originally in the warehouse on one of the main stairways. At some stage it was in corridor in the shop. The store then moved from its original site into Eldon Square.

2. 253 men signed up, of whom 82 joined immediately after declaration of war. In addition, 35 were engaged in making munitions.

3. The book “Bainbridge, our Fallen Heroes” was researched by Ian Johnson, who very generously donated the proceeds from sales to the North East War Memorials Project.
