Memorial Description

Plaque 101 cm x 37.5 cm. There is a single line border. At left is the family coat of arms.
Lettering is in Roman capitals, with the quotation at the bottom in Gothic lower case.

In memory of
Gustavus Hamilton Blenkinsopp Coulson, V.C., D.S.O.,
Lieutenant King's Own Scottish Borderers and Adjutant 7th Battn. Mounted Infantry.
Only son of Henry John Wastell Coulson of Newbrough Hall in this parish.
Killed in action at Lambrechfontein, South Africa, on May 19th 1901, aged 22.
He received the Distinguished Service Order for his conduct in the campaign of 1900
and was later awarded the Victoria Cross for conspicuous gallantry in the action
where he fell, in saving a gun and rescuing a wounded trooper under heavy fire.

Notes

1. Lieut. Coulson won his VC in 1901 at the Battle of Lambrechtfontein. He saw a man fall from his horse and carried him on his own horse until both men and the horse were wounded. Lieut. Coulson urged the other man to make good his escape on the wounded horse. Another man came to Lieut. Coulson’s aid, but both were killed.
