a. Unveiled and dedicated 8th April 1922 by Dr. Hensley Henson, Lord Bishop of Durham; rededicated 7th September 1997.

Memorial Description

Cross of Celtic type on a pedestal and two steps set onto a part of the churchyard wall. The dedication is carried on the tapering shaft, below a wreath and sword raised in half relief. The names for 1914-18 are in two columns on the front face of the pedestal with a vertical line between. Those for 1939-45 are on the left side in a single column. The lettering is incised and leaded using sans serif capitals.

Ownership and maintenance

Maintained by Middleton St. George Parish Council.

Notes

1. It had been hoped to build an Institute as a war memorial, but this had to be abandoned through lack of funds.

2. The memorial was restored in 1997 by Hanna Conservation at a cost of over £3,000, raised by public subscription.

3. A Service for the Restoration of the War Memorial was held on 7th September 1997.

4. St. Laurence’s Church is closed. It is hoped that the memorial will remain in its present position in the churchyard.

5. A Garden of Remembrance was dedicated near the War Memorial in November 1947.
