Donated by Mrs. Kate Sample of Longhirst Grange in 1949
Cup with two handles standing on a two-tier black base with silver banding. It is of hallmarked sterling silver. It bears the Newcastle assay mark of three castles, the maker’s mark of John Langlands II and a date letter of either 1795 or 1819. The dedication is incised into the top band. Also on the base are the names of the pipers who have won the cup since 1949.
Sterling silver.

Excellent.
Northumbrian Pipers’ Society.
1. The John Sample Cup was presented to the Northumbrian Pipers Society. Later, the Alnwick Branch broke away and formed its own society. Although the cup theoretically belongs to the Northumbrian Pipers Society, the cup is competed for at the Alnwick Pipers Society competitions. It is for an annual competition, but not awarded every time if the standard is not high enough.
2. Although the stamp marks are clear, there are initials on the bowl of the cup which are difficult to decipher.
3. Many famous names in the piping world have won the cup over the years, starting with Jack Armstrong in 1949. It has also been won, often more than once, by Joe Hutton, George Atkinson, Tommy Breckons, Norma Cooke, R. Hill, Richard Butler, G.A. Murphy, Anthony Robb, Chris Ormston, D.J. Dixon, Kathryn Tickell, Neil Smith, T. Porter, Adrian Schofield, Pauline Cato, Andy Watchorn, Ray Sloan, N.A. Baker, Ann Sessoms, Daniel Parkin, Julia Say, Charles Taylor.
