Opened 1st March 1924 by Col. W.C. Blackett, C.B.E., managing director of the Charlaw and Sacriston Collieries.

Materials Used:

Red brick building, pebble dashed with red pantile roof.

Cost:

Approx. £4,000

How Money was Raised:

The directors of the Charlaw and Sacriston Collieries gave £1,000 towards the cost.

The miners of the area had subscribed £300 by weekly collections.

The balance was provided through the Miners’ Welfare Scheme.

Sculptor, Artist or Designer:

Designed by Messrs. Hays and Gray of Wingate;
Built by Mr. R. Southern of Dipton.

Memorial Hall.

The main door has the name of the hall above it.

Above this is a window, and above this yet again is the original name in gold capitals raised on slats.

“The building was erected in pressed brick with dressings of glazed faience ware”.

2. Under the Coal Mining Industry Act, the firm had a Welfare Scheme, which provided for the contribution of a penny per ton raised. Eight tenths of this made the fund which contributed to the cost of the hall. The other two-tenths was set aside for research work in connection with almost every branch of mining life.

3. It was hoped to be able to add swimming baths.

4. 300 men enlisted from the area, of whom 60 died.
