Unveiled 5th September 1921 by Col. E.P.A. Riddell, C.M.G., D.S.O.; dedicated by Rev. W.W. Lunden, chairman of the committee and rector.

Memorial Description

Cross, total height 14 feet, 1 foot square, of octagonal shape. This stands on a rough stone pedestal 3 feet high and 5 feet square, the front of which has been smoothed for the inscription. This in turn stands on two wide stone steps one foot deep. The letters are all in sans serif capitals.

Materials used

Silver grey Cornish granite with lead lettering.

In grateful memory of the / men from Hallington and Bingfield / District who served 1914-18 / The following died for England
"They sought the glory of their country, / They see the glory of God".

How money was raised

Public subscription; balance met by Misses Spencer of Hallington Demesne. Site given by Mr. W. Stephenson of Elands Green, Ponteland.

Present condition

The letters need cleaning, but otherwise good.

Ownership and maintenance

The memorial was handed over to the Chairmen of the parishes of Hallington, Bingfield and Cocklaw at the unveiling.

Notes

1. At a service at Bingfield, it was reported that from Hallington and Bingfield villages, 6 men out of a population of 41 had served. The names are on the memorial at Wall.

2. Men returning were each presented with a gold medal, raised by public subscription.
