Memorial Description
Font, octagonal, approx. 10 inches in diameter x 3 feet high. There is a simple cross carved into the stone.
A series of engraved brass strips is mounted on the octagonal rim of the wooden flanged stand which, when the font is assembled, appear immediately below the lower edge of the stone font.
The oak stand has four rounded dowels protruding from its octagonal top, into which holes in the base of the font fit, to ensure stability.
The lettering is incised using elongated sans serif capitals.

15th March, 1915, aged 23.

Notes
1. This stood beside the main font and appeared to have been used as a holy water stoup for parishioners as they entered the church.
2. St. Mary the Virgin Church at Howden-le-Wear was built to serve the Fir Tree Parish and was consecrated October 1869. It's official name was Fir Tree St. Mary and the church closed 27th January 2008. The building has been sold for conversion to residential housing.
