Memorial Description

Panels 6 feet 8 inches high x 4 feet 6 inches wide (2.3 m x 1.37 m) in total. The central panel is surmounted by a school crest with visor on top, with large oak leaves on either side of a shield.
The shield carries a cross with rampant lions in the quarters. Below this is carved the Latin phrase “Mens Sana in Corpore Sano” (A healthy mind in a healthy body). At each side of the main panel is a tall torch. All carving is in half relief.
The main central panel is divided into three. The centre is carved with a crest at top and the dedication below.
On either side is a brass plaque 3 feet high x 10 inches wide (914 mm x 254 mm) , bearing the names in a single column on each. Below all three the words “In memoriam” are carved in capitals.
On each side of the main panel, added later, there are two more panels, each bearing two brass plaques 2 feet 2 inches high x 10 inches wide (660 mm x 254 mm), with the dates “1939” and “1945” carved into the cross pieces. The names are in a single column on each.
Lettering on all brass plaques is Roman capitals.

Notes

1. Mr. Bennison, who designed the memorial, had been the school art master.

2. This had been two different schools on the same site, run by the Roman Catholics and the Church of England. The name was changed to unite them under one roof.

3. Henry Smith School in King Oswy Drive closed in 2001 before reopening as St Hild's Church of England School. St Hild's moved to a new site still on King Oswy Road and moved the Memorial with them.
