Notes

1. Mrs. T. Hindson was the wife of Mr. T. Hindson, managing director of the Framwellgate Coal Company.

2. The unveiling “could not have been in more appropriate hands for not only has that lady given frequent evidence of her appreciation of the spirit animating the lads who bravely went forth to take their part in the great world war but was herself personally interested in the memorial which bears the names of her two sons who served with distinction”. Mrs. Hindson was presented with a rose bowl in recognition of her work.

3. The area covered by Pity Me included New Pit, Old Pit and Low Moor.

4. A Soldiers and Sailors Fund set up by the end of the war had raised £233. 9s by weekly subscription and fund raising. Returning Soldiers were each given a gold medal and a ten shilling note. Dependants or next of kin of the fallen were presented either with a medal or brooch and ten shillings. Returning soldiers were entertained to dinner. The rest of the funds went towards the cost of the memorial plaque.

5. The memorial was in the Reading Room in the Community Centre, which is no longer used as such.
