Memorial Description

Memorial carved to look like a cross made of stout timbers with a laurel wreath standing on a heap of military equipment including a drinking bottle, telescope, rifle, pith helmet, sword, plus four more wreaths among the heap. One pack bears the initials “DLI” and another on the other side bears “NF”.
Mounted on the wall alongside are two marble plaques, each 18 inches high x 2 feet wide, each bearing a regimental badge raised in half relief, one for the Durham Light Infantry and the other for Northumberland Fusiliers.

2016 The memorial was placed in the forecourt of the Barracks, mounted with a stainless steel plaque.

Notes

1. This monument has been identified as being part of the Boer War Memorial which was originally in St.Mary’s Roman Catholic Cathedral and removed. See NUT038

2. The memorial had been found in a barn, having been removed from St.Mary's R.C. It was taken to Fenham Barracks, where it was placed on the first floor in corner in corridor beside Room 140.

3. In 2016, having been seen in Anzio House in a broken and discoloured condition, the memorial was cleaned and repaired at the instigation of R.S.M. Thompson. The work was carried out by Classic Masonry
