a. Unveiled 24/9/1921 by Lord Gainford, dedicated by the Lord Bishop of Durham.
Rededicated 28th April 1956

Memorial Description

Cross on tapering octagonal pillar with elaborate top, total height about 12 feet. It stands on a low step on top of a pedestal resting on a platform. This is on a step on a paved area. The dedication is carried on the front of the step below the column.
The names are carried in three columns on the front and back of the pedestal, and in two columns on the sides. The names for 1939-45 are carried on the sloping risers of the step below the pedestal. All lettering is leaded using sans serif capitals throughout.

Polished grey granite and Hardstone.

a. Sacred to the memory of / the men of this district who gave / their lives in the Great War / 1914-1918“
They died that we might live in freedom and peace”.
Erected by public subscription.
b. Also of those who gave their lives in / the Second World War 1939-1945.

Made by Messrs. Allison of South Church. Kellet and Clayton, architects, Bishop Auckland.

Notes

1. The church was converted into a multi-purpose building in 1996

2. The old part of the churchyard is closed.

3. The Faculty issued was for a plaque. It could be that there was a change of mind over the form the memorial would take.

4. Prints of the cross were available for sale from the Committee.
