Memorial Description

Workmen's Memorial Hall.
In the gable end facing the road, the bottom of the dedication is twelve brick courses off the ground. It is made of dressed sandstone.

There is a square stained glass window of nine panes, three in each of three rows. They depict (centre top) a cannon on a scroll which bears the date (1914). At centre is a wreath with swags which go into the panes on either side. At centre bottom is a dove on top of a scroll which bears the date (1918).
The building comprised a main hall which could hold 500 people; two ante-rooms, one of which held 60 people; cloakrooms; two entrances with pay boxes inside.

Red brick, sandstone, bronze plaques; interior of pitch pine.

How money was raised

Site given by Stella Coal Co. Most of the funds came from the Miners’ Welfare Fund, some from workmen’s subscriptions.

Contractors: Messrs. Charlton & Sons, Crawcrook. Mr. W. Dixon & Son, architects of Newcastle and Riding Mill.

1. Sir Wilfred Wrightson was presented with a golden key with which to open the premises.
