Memorial Description

Panel inside a plain wood frame, 42 inches high x 33 inches wide, the inner edge of which is highlighted with gold paint. There are gold bosses in each corner, and a gold Maltese cross at the top. The names are listed in two columns. The lettering is incised and painted gold, using Roman capitals throughout.
At the bottom is a brass plaque giving details of the timber used.

Others also there are who perished unknown. / Their sacrifice is not forgotten, and their / names, though lost to us, are written in / the Books of God.

Present condition

Reputedly damaged by vandals in the school. The building is now demolished.

Notes

1. The brass plate under the panel states:

"This frame is made of teak from H.M.S. 'Iron Duke',
Flagship of Admiral of the Fleet Earl Jellicoe, GCB., OM., GCVO.,
at the Battle of Jutland 31 May 1916
& presented to the School by Mrs. P. de W. Kitcat
in memory of Captain P. de W. Kitcat, RN.,
Captain of 'Wellesley' 1910-1931".


2. This was sold at auction in 2010 by the Trustees and bought by people who wanted the items kept locally. They are now at North Tyneside Museum, Segedunum, and it is thought they will go on show in 2014.

The Journal 09/10/2010 reports proposed sale

Source of quotation:
"Others also there are who . . . . " The first phrase is reminiscent of Let us now praise famous men; Apocrypha, Ecclesiasticus 44 the rest seems to be composed for the memorial.
