Memorial Description
Gun, large 150mm calibre, (Krupp pm 18 kannon), mounted on a carrier.
Plaque is located below the muzzle. It is on a raked pedestal, the metal curled to look like a scroll, on which the lettering is painted using a mix of Roman and italic upper and lower case gilded lettering.
The whole is set on a paved area within a small fence.

Notes
1. The unveiling was also attended by soldiers of 7th Batt. Light Infantry. Buglers came from 1st Cadet Batt., D.L.I.
2. The gun was captured from the Germans during the 1915 Battle of Hooge in which the Durham Light Infantry were heavily involved.
3. Esholt Hall near Leeds was the home of the Yorkshire Water Authority. in 1929 the authority expanded the sewage works at Esholt and took the opportunity to bury the hated memorial under 16 feet of clay. It was rediscovered in 1981 during more works on the sewage works and it was found that the cal had buried its metal pretty well. It was then sent to Beamish where it was restored and unveiled on August 9th 1987 Hooge day as a memorial to the Durhams who had lost their lives in Battle Northern Echo Memories 22/09/2018
4. The plaque should read "Hooge Day" and Lt.Col "R.B. Humphreys"
