Original Location

St. George's United Reformed Church, Station Road. Now called Trinity Church.

Present Location

The lectern is now in the upper floor of the redesigned church. The plaque has been removed and has been placed with others on the wall of the vestibule.

Memorial Description

Lectern, 4 feet high, with carved oak leaves and acorns at the top front. There is a plaque made of metal, which bears the dedication, the lettering in plain capitals.

Good. It is uncertain what the future of this lectern might be.

Notes

1. This church was grouped together with others (Central Hall, Thwaites Avenue and Second Avenue) in a Local Ecumenical Partnership. This church then changed its name from St. George's to Trinity Church.

2. “On 8th December 1944 Lieutenant William Leslie Carr, B.A, (Dunelm) 9th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry, was killed on active service and . . . was buried in Sittard War cemetery in The Netherlands. His name is recorded on the Ashington Roll of Honour for 1939-45 and can also be seen in the D.L.I. Book of Remembrance in the Regimental Chapel in Durham Cathedral. Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Carr presented a fine oak lectern or reading desk in memory of their son, which was dedicated by Mr. Evans on 6th July 1947." (Centenary Brochure 1899-1999)
