Memorial Description

Photograph of the roll of honour unveiled in London, framed and hung in the branch. The memorial was of marble with a central panel containing the quotation by King George V. On either side was a bronze panel, both of which bore the names in five columns on each.
At centre top was a device showing a lady standing in front of a shell. This had no significance, it apparently was part of the art deco design.

Names

W.L. Young and T. Ridley were both connected with Alnwick Branch.

Notes

1. "A photograph of the bronze Roll of Honour recently unveiled in London has been framed and hung in the branch in Bondgate Within. It contains four names connected with the Bank". There are, in fact, only two.

2. The original memorial was in the Lloyds TSB HQ in Lombard Street, London, unveiled on 8th February 1921 by Sir Richard Vassar Smith, Bt., Chairman of the Bank. It was moved to Canons House, Bristol in 2005. After 1939-45, the top part of the marble backing was raised to allow the insertion of a horizontal bronze plate bearing the names from 1939-45. This was placed above the 1914-18 plates and below the lady and the shell. The whole of the marble has now been destroyed and the bronze plaques alone have been taken to Bristol.

3. Also in Lloyds TSB possession is Book of Remembrance containing “Photographs of the members of the / Directorate and Staff / who lost their / lives during the Great War / 1914-1918”. This contains photos of all but five of the members of staff who were killed in action or died from wounds. This is in the Lloyds TSB Group Archives, 25 Gresham Street, London, EC2V 7HN. It contains photographs of the two men mentioned above.

4. Letter written to Lloyds TSB in Lombard Street Feb. 25th 2005 to see if it is possible to get a copy of the photograph.
