Notes
1. This was found in a cellar in St. Paul’s Church in 2015 and handed to the Bailiffgate Museum.
2. St. Paul’s C of E. Church was combined with St. Cuthbert’s in the 1980s and the building was taken over by the Roman Catholics.
3. The “Scrap of Paper” was the Treaty signed in London in 1839 guaranteeing Belgian neutrality. The signatories were Great Britain, Belgium, Austria, France, Prussia and Russia. The expression came into prominence during a meeting between the German Chancellor and the British Ambassador on the 4th August 1914 just hours before war was declared. The Chancellor, von Bethmann-Hollweg said that 'Britain is going to war over a scrap of paper'
4. “Non Sibi sed patriae” translates as “Not for himself, but for his country”
