Souvenir in affectionate remembrance of
the
Passengers Officers & crew
who lost their lives on the S.S. Lusitania
”Torpedoed by a German Submarine, May 7th, 1915”.
---------------------------------------------------------
Left hand side below picture:
The ship was going at 18 knots to catch the tide at Liverpool
without having to stop, and as the engines were put out of work-
ing the ship was still going when she went under only for that,
hundreds of lives could have been saved. She left New York
at noon on May 1st and was sunk off Kinsale Head, South
Coast of Ireland on Frday, May 7th, by a German submarine.
The July returned the following verdict:-
The deceased met their death about eight miles
S.S.W. of the Old Head of Kinsale, on Friday, May 7th, 1915,
owing to the sinking of the mail steamer Lusitania by torpedoes
fired, WITHOUT warning, by a German submarine. We find that
this appalling crime was contrary to international law, and the
conventions of all civilised nations, and we therefore charge the
officers of the said submarine, and the Emperor and Government
of Germany, under whose orders they acted, with the crime of
wilful and wholesale murder, before the tribunal of the civilised
world.
The Lusitania was built in 1906 for the Cunard Liner, with
A length overall of 785 ft, a breath (sic) of 88 ft, a depth to the bat
Deck of 80ft., a maximum draught of 37 ft., and a height to the
Masthead of 210ft., the gross tonnage of the ship being 40,000.
Her turbine engines had a horse-power of 68,000, giving ??
Speed of 24½ knots. This was often exceeded, and her average
for a whole day has been as much as 24, 25 knots. In many of her
. . . . . with only four clear days at sea, she made over 60
. . . . . tours. The builders of vessel were Messrs. John
Brown and Co. of Clydebank and the initial cost of the leviathan
Was estimated at £1,250.000.
