Notes

1. 2nd Lt. Philip Brown was an Oxford graduate who gave up the idea of an academic career to move to the North East in 1911 to run classes for miners. He received a shot in the thighs in 1915, from which he died. His observer, Pte. Thomas Kenny, a County Durham miner, refused to leave him, and crawled for more than an hour with the injured officer on his back. Kenny was awarded the Victoria Cross.

See Thomas Kenny Every Name a Story entry, for the full story.

2. The painting has not been seen for five decades, and a search has been launched to try and find it. The plaque has recently been found. (no photo yet) circa 2014.

3. "Philip Anthony Brown, Lecturer in Economics at Durham and one of the first tutors to be appointed. Educated at Malvern and Oxford. Brown typifies that lost generation; less typical was his compassion and commitment to the cause of working class education".
Quote from his Memorial Service, Jevons said, “His devoted work and great interest helped the Movement [WEA] considerably. He won the hearts of all who came into contact with him; he had such a pure soul and disinterestedness of motive.”
Brown left £200 to the District and an equal sum to the Central Office. The interest on Brown’s bequest was to be used for grants for summer school students. A memorial appeal was launched and raised £111. This was used partly to furnish and decorate the new premises in the Royal Arcade in 1918. A small plaque and picture commemorating Brown have recently come to light during these researches. Previously the District Offices had been at 84 Westmoreland Road in Newcastle."
