Plaque Carr 1916 St. Thomas
St.Thomas Church, Main Road, Cowshill. In the nave.
Unveiled 26th December 1921 by Major Watson, late of the 18th D.L.I.; dedicated by Rev. J. Harrison.
Plaque 41 cm high x 61 cm wide mounted on a wood pattress 9 cm wider all round. There is a double line border which outlines the screws in each corner. Lettering is in a mix of fonts in black with some red letters.
To the Glory of God and in Proud and Loving Memory of
John (Jack) Carr of Cowshill, Weardale,
Joined the 18th D.L.I. September 1914,
Was at Hartlepool Bombardment,
Served in Egypt, then in France.
Killed in France on the 1st July 1916, aged 23 years.
Greater love hath no man than this,
that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Erected by his Father and Mother
In fond remembrance of a loving and dutiful son.
1. The unveiling was carried out by Major Watson, who was Sgt. Carr’s Company Officer.
2. “On the memorable 1st July, 1916, on the Somme, he was wounded shortly after ‘going over’ but he struggled on at the head of his men until he was killed. He was one of those unknown heroes of the war”.
3. Sgt. Carr wrote letters to the local press which were published under the title of a ‘Wearside Soldiers’ Diary’.
