Memorial Description

Plaque 4 feet high x 2 feet wide set in a plain wood frame 2 inches wide. There is a patterned border on a red background culminating in a cross in a squared circle at the corners. At centre top are two union flags. The names below the dedication are in three columns according to jobs. Lettering is in black sans serif capitals apart from the words “Dedicated by” at the top which are in elaborate capitals.
Below this has been added a plaque for 1939-45. It is very plain with a double line border. The names are listed in three columns using sans serif capitals.

Notes

1. The site is now occupied by the Sunderland Glass Centre.

2. The Heritage Centre was contacted by two brothers who had found this in a skip and wished to donate it.

3. One of the names from 1914-18 is M. Sloan. He was Mason Sloan, a labourer, who is also commemorated on the memorial in Venerable Bede Church, (Ref. M46.19).

4. From the firm, 296 men enlisted, of whom 40 were killed.
