Notes

1. “The Parish of St. Jude, Shieldfield, Newcastle, was created in 1880 from part of Christ Church Parish. The original temporary building was replaced by a new church whose foundation stone was laid on 3rd July 1890 and consecrated 2nd August 1891. By the early 1970s St. Jude’s had become redundant mainly because of the redevelopment of Shieldfield and Sandyford areas and the congregation transferred to the nearby St. Barnabas’ Church.
Since 1975 the church building has been occupied by a firm of picture framers, but the original monumental tablets are still in place on the walls. Of particular interest is the Roll of Honour of those members of the congregation and the parish who lost their lives in the First World War. Not only does the list give names and ranks but also regiments”. Journal of the Northumberland and Durham Family History Society, Vol. 14 No. 1 Spring 1979.

2. The building has long been occupied by the Ian Darby Partnership of chartered architects and project managers.

3. At the unveiling, the service was led by Canon East, vicar of St. Ann’s as the vicar, Rev. C. Digby-Seymour, was ill.

4. The name “Dvr Gallon D. McG. A.S.C.” is wrong on the memorial. The name should be Gallon J. McG. for James McGrevy Gallon. He was brother to Gallon, A. McG, also on the memorial. (Information provided by John Gallon, nephew).
