Memorial Description

Plaque of popular design set in a wood frame. There is a border culminating in roundels in each corner. The main panel has an arched top with hatched spandrels. At centre top are two crossed union flags. The names of the fallen are in three columns inside a box. The names of those who served are in three columns. All lettering is in sans serif capitals.

Notes

1. The firm went out of business approx. 1924.

2. There is a report of an illuminated roll of honour which was unveiled in September 1920 by the managing director, Mr. G. Gilbey. It named 23 who died and 127 who served. It was to hang in the Robert Candlish Memorial Hall. Auckland and County Chronicle 30/09/1920

3. The unveiling took place at a meat tea in the Drill Hall which was attended by 250 returned soldiers and sailors, relatives and friends.

4. At the ceremony, a vote of thanks was given “To Mr. Gilbey and our fellow-workers who by their united generosity jointly paid our house rents and made us other gifts during the whole period of the war”. This fund was created by workmen paying a weekly contribution which went to the town’s relief fund and the remainder to paying rents of the whole of the families of the men serving.
