Memorial Description

Roll of Honour, 31.5 cm high x 23 cm wide. There is a double line border containing a pattern culminating in elaborate corners with a flower and leaves motif. At centre top is the name, with a cross below with the words “Roll of honour on either side, printed in red. The names of those who served are in four columns below this, divided by vertical lines. At the bottom, below the quotation “Who nobly fighting, nobly fell” are the names of the fallen, again in four columns. Some names have an asterisk alongside, which indicates that they “Belong to Queeburn Hall”.

Very poor. It has gone to Tyne & Wear Conservation Dept. for repair.

Notes

1 “Queeburn” may be an old mis-spelling of “Ouseburn”.

2. The Mission Church was re-opened and the unveiling of the memorial was part of the event.

Source of quotation:
“Who nobly fighting, nobly fell”. Possibly a variation on “Who nobly striving, nobly fell” from “Hail! and Farewell!” by John Oxenham. Also used in his poem “Hymn: For the Men at the Front”
