On the Alamein Memorial, Egypt, is the name of 522484 Corporal Frederick Matthews serving with the 30 Squadron Royal Air Force who died 31/05/1941.

In East Rainton St Cuthbert's Churchyard is a family headstone which reads:

“Resting”.
Sacred
to the memory of
my dear wife Lavinia Matthews
who died 10th June 1942
aged 67 years
also William Matthews
husband of the above
who died 28th December 1958
aged 66 years.
Cpl. Frederick Matthews RAF
son of the above
killed in action in Crete
31st May 1941 aged 26 years.
