William was the son of Margaret Jane and the late Robert. He was the husband of Louisa (nee Slipper) whom he married in the 3rd Quarter of 1926 at Newcastle upon Tyne. According to the 1931 Electoral Register they were living at 48 Railway Street, Newcastle.

He served with “D” Company, 2nd Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers and was formerly (TR/5/170851, Private), Training Reserve Battalion, West Riding Regiment and (35171, Private), 5th Battalion, West Riding Regiment.
