He was the son of Professor John H. Merivale, and the husband of Blanche Merivale.
Morpeth Herald 29/09/1916 carries a brief obituary:
The death in action is announced of Capt. J.W. Merivale, of the Northumberland Fusiliers. The deceased officer, who was 29 years of age, was the son of Mr [sic] and Mrs J.H. Merivale, of Togston, Northumberland.
Morpeth Herald 06/10/1916 carries an obituary:
Capt. J.W. Merivale, who is reported killed, was born on June 6th, 1887, and was the third surviving son of Mr and Mrs Merivale, of Togston. He was educated at Queen’s College, Oxford. Upon leaving to become an articled clerk with Messrs Wilkinson and Marshall solicitors, Newcastle, he obtained a commission in the Northumberland Fusiliers, retiring in 1912. He re-joined immediately upon the outbreak of war, and took part in the second battle of Ypres in April, 1915, when he was wounded. In September of that year he returned to the Front. He was killed in action on September 15th, at the head of his company. He married in 1913, Blanche, daughter of Mr G.H. Liddell, and leaves one daughter.
The Court Journal 06/10/1916 reports:
“Merivale – Killed in action, on 15th September 1916, John William Merivale, Captain , Northumberland Fusiliers, third surviving son of Mr. and Mrs. Merivale, of Togstone, (sic), Northumberland, aged twenty-nine.”
John William Merivale is remembered in Alnwick in the Battalion HistoryA13.01 and A13.07 and in Newcastle on NUT273
