Son of Albert Verner Smith and Martha Smith. of West Cornforth.

F/Sgt. Smith was serving with 17 O.T.U. He was a crew member of Wellington X HE276 which took off from Silverstone on a night navigation exercise. On return three hours later the aircraft crashed and burst into flames. 6 crew were killed and two were injured. He had previously served with 75 Sqdn. London Gazette 13/9/1940 published details of his award of the D.F.M.
