Fittes, A., Sgt., M.M., 1914-18
Heslop’s Local Advertiser 17/11/1916 reports:

Sergt. A. Fittes of 6 Elmfield Terrace, Pelaw, has been awarded the Military Medal. The official communication, in which his name is coupled with that of L.Sergt. H. Craddock, states that “Near Martinpuich on 17th Sept. 1916, these two N.C.Os showed great courage, enterprise and devotion to duty in carrying grenades through a heavy barrage to the –th London Regiment in the front line trenches. Their officers had been killed and the guides lost. They proceeded to recognoitre (sic) the country, found the –th London Regiment, returned to their party and led the men through to their destination under heavy fire. Sergt. Fittes, previous to the war, was a signalman on the N.E.R. His father, Mr. A. Fittes, is an old resident of this district.”
