Patten, J., L/Smn., 1918
In Achiet-le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension is the Commonwealth War Grave of Z/3930 Leading Seaman James Patten, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, who died 21/08/1918.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

James was born on September 17th 1896. He was working as a miner living with his parents, Robert and Margaret at 7, Front Street, Stobswood, when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on March 6th 1915.

He joined the Drake Battalion on August 20th 1915 and served until September 30th 1915 when he was hospitalised with Influenza.

Following recuperation in the UK James rejoined the Drake Battalion in France on January 9th 1917 and was hospitalised with Trench Foot on February 7th 1917.

After rejoining the Drake Battalion again on March 24th 1917 James was hospitalised again this time with Gonorrhea.

James rejoined the Battalion for the last time on May 30th 1918 and was reported as being killed in action on August 21st 1918.

James Patten is remembered in Ulgham on U1.01
