PEGSWOOD

Ingham, J., Pte., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 20/1673 Private James Ingham, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

It is thought he came from Pegswood. His name does not appear on any memorials in the Castle Morpeth area.

Soldiers Died in the Great War says he was born in Burnley, Lancs., and enlisted in Newcastle.

Any information on Pte. Ingham would be greatly appreciated by his granddaughter via NEWMP.

Died 1st July 1916, aged 40
Born in Burnley, Lancashire.Son of William and Alice Ann Ingham (nee Baxendale). William was a coal miner. They had sixteen children including:

James Ingham (b. 1876)
Thomas Ingham (b. 1878)
Henry Ingham (b. 1880)
Robert Ingham (b. 1884)
Fred Ingham (b. 1887)
Emily Ingham (b. 1889, d. 1909)
Alice Ingham (b. 1891)
Mary Ingham (b. 1893)
Arthur Ingham (b. 1901, d. 1903)

Married Barbara Douglas Dargue in 1901. They had at least five children:

William Ingham (b. 1902)
Martha Ingham (b. 1903)
Margaret Jane Ingham (b. 1906)
Alice Ann Ingham (b. 1908)
Robert Ingham (b. 1910)

After his death Barbara married James Hamilton.

Employed as a coal miner.

Enlisted at Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

His brother Private Thomas Ingham, 8762, 12th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, died on 24th June 1917, aged 38.He is buried in grave VI.D.13. in Mons (Bergen) Communal Cemetery.

Notes:

There is an “In Memoriam” notice in the Morpeth Herald and Reporter on 6th July 1917 from his father, mother, brothers and sisters.

James and Barbara had five children at the time of the 1911 census but there may be more afterwards.

In the 1911 census James stated that he was born in Burnley which confirms the SDGW information.
