Ions, C.R., Pte., 1915

In Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm), West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 5/2678 Private C.R. Ions, serving with the 5th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 28/12/1915.

Morpeth Herald 28/01/1916 carries a brief obituary:

Mr and Mrs James Ions, of Ponteland, have been officially notified that their son, Private Chas. R. Ions, was killed in action on December 28th. Private Ions, who was an old Territorial, re-joined the 5th N.F.(T.F.) in September, 1914, and left for France in April last year, being attached to the Bomb Section.

For a number of years he was a playing member of the football and cricket clubs, and in the summer of 1914 he won both the batting and bowling prizes given in connection with the latter. Private Ions was a member of the local branch of the N.I.O.O.

In Ponteland (St.Mary’s) Churchyard is a family headstone which reads:

In loving memory of
James
dearly beloved husband of
Jane Ions
of Ponteland
who died June 29th 1922
aged 62 years.
Also Charles R., their son
who was killed in action
in France Dec. 28th 1915
aged 27 years
and is interred at Zillebeke
Near Ypres.
Also the above
Jane Ions
who died May 27th 1935
Also William
dearly beloved son of the above
who died April 6th 1952.

Charles R. Ions is remembered in Ponteland on P12.08 and P12.10
