In Ponteland (St.Mary’s) Churchyard is a headstone which reads:

In loving memory of
Margaret
Dearly loved wife of
William George Lapping
Who died 20th Jan. ?1944
Aged 49 years.
Also their dear son
Flying Officer
James B. Lapping
R.A.F.
Who was killed in action
8th April 1943
aged 22 years.

F/Off. Lapping was serving with 49 Squadron. He was a crew member of Lancaster III ED590 EA-1 which took off from Fiskerton on a mission to Duisberg. The aircraft crashed in the target area, killing all the crew.
