Armstrong, R.J., Cpl., 1916
In Bapaume Post Military Cemetery, Albert, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 23/622 Corporal Robert James Armstrong, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

Colin Roberts has offered the following:

Robert James Armstrong was born at 8 Hood Street, Morpeth on November 18th 1896. He was the son of Joseph Armstrong, asylum clerk, and Sarah, nee Clowes.

He enlisted in Newcastle and served overseas from January 1st 1916 with the 23rd (Service) Battalion (4th Tyneside Scottish) 102nd Brigade. 34th Division attacked 1st July 1916, which is when Cpl. Armstrong died.

He was killed on the first day of the Battle of Somme in the attack at La Boiselle.

Cpl. Armstrong was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
