CRESSWELL

Cresswell, J.B., Lieut., 1920

In Cresswell (St. Bartholomew) Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of Lieutenant John Baker Cresswell serving with the Royal Navy on H.M.S. "Excellent" who died 16/10/1920.

The family headstone reads:

Addision Francis Baker Cresswell
Died 7th September 1921 aged 46.

And his son
John Baker Cresswell
Drowned 16th October 1920 aged 20.

H.M.S. Excellent was – and is a "stone frigate2 – a shore establishment for training at Portsmouth.

Lieut. Cresswell was drowned in the execution of his duty. Morpeth Herald 16/09/1921. He was buried temporarily at Portsmouth but his family had him brought home to be buried with his father in a joint ceremony.
