In Whitley Bay (Hartley South) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 4468653 Private Joseph Blain serving with the Durham Light Infantry who died 23/12/1941.

The family headstone reads:

In loving
Memory of
Acting L.Cpl.
Joseph Blain D.L.I.
accidentally killed
during manoeuvres
23 Dec. 1941 aged 33 years
Also his dear ?wife isabella
born . . . . .
A much loved . . . and gran.

In front of the headstone is a vase which bears the names:

Joe and
Ella

Son of Alexander Blain, and Jane Blain (nee Sharp); husband of Isabella Blain (nee Jackson), of Cullercoats.
