156942 Flying Officer Vivian Basil Charlton was serving in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve as a Flying Instructor, he died on the 17th April 1944.

He was the son of William and Janet Charlton, husband of Barbara Ann Charlton, of Monkseaton.

Whitley Seaside Chronicle and Gazette Friday, 05/05/1944:

KILLED IN ACTIVE SERVICE
Flying Officer Vivian Basil Charlton R.A.F.V.R.

Husband of Barbara (nee Reay), of 47 Lish Avenue, Whitley Bay, who was killed in active service, in April, 1944.

A member of the Civil Air Guard, he took his "A" Licence for flying in 1939, and at the commencement of the war volunteered for service with the R.A.F., and served overseas until recently.

He was 27 years of age, and had lived in Whitley Bay all his life. His many friends have learned with regret of his sudden death.

The funeral took place at Whitley New Cemetery, with military honours, prior to which a service was held at St Margaret's Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. C. E. Cook.
