Chambers, R., A/Smn., 1916

In Tranchee de Mecknes Cemetery, Aix-Noulette is the Commonwealth War Grave of Tyneside Z/1035 Able Seaman Robert Chambers serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 30/07/1916.

Colin Boyd has submitted the following:

Robert was born on 25th July 1894 and was working as a miner living with his father, Matthew at 52, Blyth Street, Percy Main when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 2nd November 1914.

He joined the 3rd Platoon, 'C' Company of the Collingwood Battalion on 4th March 1915 and then transferred to the Anson Battalion on 8th June 1915. He was hospitalised on 16th September 1915 suffering from debility and rejoined the Anson Battalion on 2nd December 1915.

Robert was killed in action on 30th July 1916 in France whilst serving with the Divisional Engineering Company.
