C.E. Johnson
Northumberland Fusiliers
18th September 1914 age 30

William Kirby has submitted the following information:

The Civil Registration Birth Index shows him to have been born in 1884. The Index for 1837-1915 shows him to have married Alice Cooper in 1909.

The 1911 Census shows him and his wife with a 1 year old daughter, Ethel. He was employed as a billposter.

An unidentified document states: "Private Charles Edward Johnson, 1st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, Nile Street, North Shields. The first casualty recorded on our Roll of Honour. Died Friday 18th September 1914. Buried at Tynemouth (Preston) Cemetery.

Charles Johnson was a reservist recalled to the Northumberland Fusiliers in August 1914. He was badly wounded at the battle of the Marne and repatriated to Netley Hospital, Southampton in early September. His wife Alice was at his bedside when he died."

De Ruvigny's "Roll of Honour" states that he joined the Northumberland Fusiliers and served with the Expeditionary Force.

He is remembered in Tynemouth on T36.14 page 15
