On Liverpool Naval Memorial is the name of Skipper John William Cowling, serving with the Royal Naval reserve who died 14/12/1939.

In Preston Cemetery is a family headstone bearing an inscription on the kerbstone which reads:

Chief Skipper John William Cowling, R.N.R.
Killed in action 14th December 1939 aged 32 years.

John William Cowling is remembered in our List of Ships’ crews
