In Tynemouth (Preston) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 2083283 Sapper Robert Matthews Bamborough serving with the Royal Engineers who died 06/02/1940.

The headstone reads:

In
loving memory of
my dear husband
Joseph William Bamborough
died Decr. 31st 1933 in his 57th year
Robert Matthews
son of the above
died Feb. 6th 1940 in his 20th year
also Mary Jane his beloved wife
died April 8th 1948 in her 72nd year
"At rest"

He is remembered in the Scout Roll of Honour 1939-45 as being the Patrol Leader of the 5th Whitley (St.George's) Group, aged 18 years. He died of appendicitis.
