Sgt. Snowball was serving with 635 Squadron. He was a crew member of Lancaster III ND841 F2-D which took off from Downham Market on a mission to Calais to mark a coastal defence battery. On take-off the Lancaster swerved and hit a hangar and exploded. All seven crew members died.
